The City of Oak Ridge North participates in the National flood Insurance Program (NFIP) which means that federally subsidized flood insurance is available to everyone in the City. Property that is outside the floodplain may be able purchase a low cost Preferred Risk Policy. The purchase of flood insurance is highly recommended for everyone since basic homeowner's insurance policies will not cover damages from flood water. With heavy rains, the streets and ditches can quickly fill up with water, even if they are outside the SFHA. Also, since the contents of the home is not covered with standard flood insurance, you might want to consider purchasing a separate contents insurance policy. There is a 30-day waiting period before a policy becomes effective, so don’t wait for the next flood. For more information about flood insurance you can visit www.floodsmart.gov or call or visit the Public Works Department.
